Sizing it to the route: seats versus chairs This is where most first-time bus buyers get it wrong. Wheelchair positions and passenger seats compete for the same floor. Every securement position you add costs you roughly two to four seats, depending on where it sits and whether the seats fold or come out entirely. A bus advertised as a 14 passenger is a 14 passenger with zero chairs on board. Put two chairs in it and you may be looking at 8 ambulatory seats. So do not size on the sticker. Size on your worst day. Intrastate for-hire autobus service generally requires a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity from the MVC. Interstate operation means a USDOT number from FMCSA. If you are not sure which bucket you are in, call the MVC bus unit before you buy rather than after. Do not buy a van to carry students without checking first This one catches daycares, preschools, and small private schools every year.
